Valet vs Grab vs Parking: the Real Math

Drive-home valet is usually cheaper than Grab-both-ways plus overnight parking once you add up the full round trip — but not always, and this article shows the actual numbers for three common scenarios rather than asking you to take our word for it.

The comparison in every case is the same: 98 Valet's flat $45 (plus any add-ons that genuinely apply) against Grab home tonight, Grab back tomorrow to retrieve the car, and whatever overnight parking costs in between. We're using typical, realistic ranges rather than a single fixed number, because both Grab fares and parking rates genuinely vary by time, location, and demand — a Friday or Saturday night with surge pricing pushes the Grab side of the comparison up further, which only widens the gap in scenarios 1 and 2 below.

One thing that stays constant on our side: $45 is $45 regardless of surge, weather, or how busy the night is. The only thing that changes our number is your own trip — an extra stop, a Sentosa crossing, or a pickup outside our 9pm–4am core hours, all listed on our pricing page.

Scenario 1: CBD night out

You drove into the CBD for dinner and drinks, parked in a commercial car park, and it's now well past midnight.

In this scenario, valet is the clear win — CBD overnight parking rates alone often exceed the entire valet fare, before you've even added the two Grab fares on top. And that's assuming you actually remember to move the car the next day before a second night's parking charge kicks in.

Scenario 2: Sentosa dinner

You drove across to Sentosa for dinner, parking is resort or beach-club rates, and Sentosa's causeway access adds its own cost either way.

Valet still comes out well ahead here, even with the Sentosa surcharge added — the surcharge is a fraction of what Sentosa's own overnight parking and the double Grab trip would otherwise cost.

Scenario 3: heartland gathering

You drove to a friend's place in the heartlands for a birthday gathering. Parking is free on the street, and you live a short distance away.

This is the scenario where we'd tell you straight: if you live close by and parking is free, a single short Grab home is very likely cheaper than booking a drive-home valet. Skip our service, take the Grab, and come back for your car in daylight — the math doesn't favour us here, and pretending otherwise wouldn't earn your trust the next time it actually does. Where it flips back in valet's favour is if the gathering runs past our off-peak cutoff or if you'd rather not leave the car on the street overnight at all, in which case $45 buys you certainty that a $12 Grab doesn't.

If more than one car needs to get home

All three scenarios above assume one car. If you drove out with friends who each brought their own car, the math shifts further in valet's favour: book 2 cars together in one order and each pays $42, or $40 each for 3 or more — against a Grab-plus-parking bill that scales per person with no equivalent group discount. A CBD night out with three cars, for instance, runs roughly $300–$360 the Grab-and-parking way versus $120 total for three cars booked together as drive-home valet.

Why the gap flips

The pattern across all three: drive-home valet's value grows with distance and with parking cost. Short heartland trips with free parking are where Grab wins. Anywhere overnight parking runs into the $40+ range — CBD, Orchard, Sentosa, most nightlife districts — the flat $45 (or $55 with Sentosa) usually beats the Grab-plus-parking combination, often by a wide margin, and it also skips the actual time cost of a second trip the next day just to fetch the car.

There's a fourth line nobody puts in a spreadsheet: your own time. Even in scenario 3, where Grab wins on pure dollars, someone still has to go back for the car — an hour out of a weekend that a drive-home valet would have skipped entirely for $45.
